Yvonne Okwara Announces Citizen TV Exit After Eight Years: What Next?

Explore her broadcasting journey and what is known about her next career move.

Yvonne Okwara has announced her departure from Citizen TV, according to a report published by Nairobi Leo on October 27, 2026. The announcement marks the end of an eight-year chapter at the Royal Media Services-owned broadcaster.

Okwara joined Citizen TV in May 2018 after leaving KTN News. The move also brought her back to Royal Media Services, where she had previously worked in radio before advancing her television career.

During her time at Citizen TV, her assignments included prime-time news presentation and current affairs discussions. In May 2023, the station announced that she would host The Explainer on Tuesday evenings as part of changes to its programming.

That reshuffle followed Waihiga Mwaura’s departure for the BBC. Okwara moved from the Thursday evening slot, which Sam Gituku took over. At the time, Citizen TV said the changes reflected its ambition to offer audiences deeper explanations of the news.

Her contributions also extended to Yvonne’s Take, a commentary platform addressing public affairs and governance. Citizen Digital’s author page lists pieces published throughout October 2026, including commentary dated October 22, placing her latest published work just days before the reported departure announcement.

Outside the newsroom, Okwara has built experience in moderating high-level discussions. Her professional profile highlights engagements involving leaders from government, business and international institutions, alongside her participation in Kenya’s presidential debates in 2017 and 2022.

Her professional responsibilities have also included leadership and advisory work. The International Center for Research on Women lists her as an ICRW Africa board member and identifies her involvement with Enactus and Africa Uncensored. These are established roles, rather than newly announced appointments following her Citizen TV exit.

Details of Okwara’s next move remain unclear in the departure report reviewed. It does not identify a new employer or set out her future projects. For now, the reported announcement establishes the close of her Citizen TV chapter, while the direction of her next professional journey awaits further clarification.
