Ebola Alert in Eastern Congo Raises New Health-Security Concerns for East Africa

A worsening Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has raised fresh alarm across East Africa after Africa CDC warned that the disease is spreading beyond its original epicentre.

The outbreak has become one of the most serious public-health emergencies in the region, with thousands of cases and deaths reported. While infections have shown signs of easing in some parts of Ituri province, health authorities say cases have risen sharply in neighbouring North Kivu and Haut-Uele.

The spread is particularly concerning because eastern Congo is already affected by insecurity, displacement and pressure on health facilities. Conflict makes it difficult for health workers to reach communities, trace contacts, conduct safe burials and deliver vaccines where they are needed most.

Vaccination campaigns are under way, but supply limitations remain a major challenge. Health authorities are using the Ervebo vaccine as part of efforts to contain the outbreak, although the number of available doses is limited compared with the scale of the threat.

For Kenya and the wider East African Community, the outbreak is a reminder that diseases can cross borders through trade, travel and population movement. Kenya’s position as a regional transport and aviation hub means that preparedness at airports, border points and health facilities remains essential.

The danger should not be overstated, but it should not be ignored either. A strong response depends on surveillance, rapid testing, trained health workers, accurate public information and cooperation between neighbouring countries.

Kenya’s expected emergency World Bank financing is partly linked to health risks arising from the regional Ebola outbreak. If used effectively, it could support preparedness measures and help protect a health system that is already under pressure from other demands.

The situation in Congo is also a human story. Behind the figures are families dealing with illness, bereavement, displacement and the fear that comes when medical services are stretched thin. The speed of the response in the coming weeks will be crucial.
