Huawei has launched a new foldable smartphone series as competition intensifies among the world’s biggest technology brands.
The latest foldable devices are priced from roughly $2,980, placing them firmly in the luxury smartphone market. Huawei is positioning the phones as high-end alternatives for users who want a device that can work both as a smartphone and a compact tablet.
Foldable phones have long attracted attention, but their high prices have kept them out of reach for many consumers. Companies believe that may be changing as displays improve, hinges become more durable and buyers increasingly use phones for work, video, gaming and content creation.
The launch also comes as competition heats up between Huawei, Xiaomi and Apple. Each company is racing to control the next phase of the smartphone market, where premium hardware, artificial intelligence and software ecosystems will matter as much as camera quality.
In Kenya, foldable phones remain a niche product. The price is far beyond what most consumers can afford, particularly when basic smartphones already provide access to mobile money, social media, education and business tools.
However, premium devices still influence the wider market. Features first introduced in expensive phones often become more affordable over time. Better cameras, faster chips, AI assistants and stronger batteries tend to move gradually into mid-range devices.
For Kenya’s young digital creators, the smartphone race matters. A phone is no longer only a communication device; it is a camera, editing suite, office, shopfront and mobile bank. As manufacturers compete, consumers may benefit from better technology and more options.
The real question is whether foldables will become a long-term standard or remain a luxury product for a small group of buyers. For now, Huawei is betting heavily that the future of smartphones can bend.
