Lamu Refinery: A New Opportunity for Kenyan MSMEs

60,000 jobs to be created

The groundbreaking of the proposed Dangote East Africa Refinery in Lamu has opened a new chapter in Kenya’s industrial story—and for the country’s micro, small and medium enterprises, the opportunity may extend far beyond the refinery gates.

The $16 billion project, officially launched on September 30, 2026, is planned as a 700,000-barrel-per-day facility and is expected to stimulate a wider industrial ecosystem around Lamu and the region. Reports indicate that the project could create tens of thousands of jobs and support related industries, including petrochemicals and bitumen production.

But the biggest question for Kenyan entrepreneurs is not simply how many people the refinery will employ.

It is how many Kenyan businesses will supply it.

A project of this magnitude will require a vast network of suppliers and service providers. Construction materials, transport, logistics, accommodation, catering, security, cleaning, ICT, engineering, equipment maintenance, fabrication, packaging and professional services are among the areas in which local enterprises could potentially participate.

The refinery could therefore become more than an energy project. It could become an anchor for a much broader industrial supply chain.

The MSME opportunity

For the State Department for MSME Development, headed by Principal Secretary Susan Auma Mang’eni, the emerging refinery economy presents an important opportunity to connect Kenyan enterprises with large-scale industrial markets.

The department has already been implementing programmes intended to strengthen enterprise capacity, access to finance, business skills and market linkages.

The NYOTA programme, for example, has combined business support, training, mentorship and start-up financing, with the programme targeting more than 100,000 vulnerable young people across Kenya.
