“No More Free Votes: Western Kenya MPs Demand Ruto’s Running Mate Slot for Oparanya”

Western Kenya leaders are pushing for a stronger political bargain in President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a joint statement issued after a meeting of the Western Kenya Parliamentary Caucus, Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala and other legislators said the region’s continued support for the Kenya Kwanza administration must come with meaningful political representation and a clear stake in national decision-making.

The leaders argued that Western Kenya cannot remain a voting bloc that is only remembered during elections. They said the region must be adequately represented in key state institutions and senior political positions as the country begins shaping alliances for the next presidential contest.

Among the demands raised is the retention of Western Kenya’s member in the Parliamentary Service Commission, an institution that plays a major role in the administration and governance of Parliament. The caucus said the position is important in ensuring that the region’s voice remains present within one of the country’s most influential constitutional bodies.

The leaders also proposed that former Kakamega Governor and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya be considered as President Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 election. They described Oparanya as an experienced leader with the political weight, national profile and regional networks required to strengthen the President’s support in Western Kenya.

The statement signals a growing determination by Western Kenya leaders to negotiate from a position of unity. The region has often found itself divided among different political parties and leaders, weakening its ability to secure major government positions and development commitments.

Those present at the caucus meeting included Hon. Raphael Wanjala of Budalangi, Hon. Clement Soya of Sabatia, Hon. John Waluke of Sirisia, Hon. Omboko Milemba of Emuhaya and Hon. Emmanuel Wangwe of Navakholo, among other leaders.

Their message is clear: Western Kenya wants more than promises. It wants a defined political stake, influence in government and a serious role in determining the leadership ticket that will seek power in 2027.
