Oburu Oginga Breaks Silence After Nairobi Hospital Stay, Dismisses Readmission Reports

Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement leader Dr Oburu Oginga has broken his silence over swirling reports about his health, confirming that he has been discharged from a Nairobi hospital and is recovering at home.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the veteran politician dismissed fresh claims linking him to a new hospital admission, insisting that he only visited the facility for a routine check-up.
The health concerns come at a sensitive time for the Odinga family and the opposition party, just months after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October 2025.
While Oginga has downplayed recent rumors linking him to a fresh admission, reports confirm that the senator was hospitalized at Nairobi Hospital in August 2026, from which he was later discharged. The ODM leader maintains, however, that any recent visit to the facility was purely for a routine check-up, not an emergency admission.
Speaking to the media, the senator assured the public that he was "very well" and urged Kenyans to disregard what he termed as unfounded speculation about his condition.
As the elder statesman now steering the opposition party following his brother's death, Oginga's health remains a subject of significant national interest. The ODM has yet to settle its long-term leadership question, leaving the octogenarian senator at the helm during a delicate transitional period.
Tuesday's statement also echoed a similar denial issued in October 2025, when social media posts falsely claimed Oginga had collapsed and been rushed to Karen Hospital shortly after Raila's death. Karen Hospital Director Dr Dan Gikonyo had then refuted the claims, confirming there was no record of the senator's admission at the facility.
For now, Oginga says his focus remains on his recovery and his continued leadership of ODM as the party navigates one of the most turbulent chapters in its history.
