Africa’s Ballon d’Or Hope: Hakimi and Mané Carry the Continent’s Dream Into 2026 Race

Africa will once again have a voice in football’s biggest individual prize after Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Senegal’s Sadio Mané were named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or.

For Hakimi, the nomination crowns a remarkable season with Paris Saint-Germain. The attacking right-back combined defensive discipline with creativity, recording four goals and 17 assists in 49 matches. He also helped PSG win the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.

His nomination is significant because defenders are often overlooked in individual awards dominated by strikers and attacking midfielders. Hakimi’s inclusion shows how modern full-backs have become central to the way elite teams attack, create chances and control matches.

Mané, meanwhile, remains one of Africa’s most respected football figures. The Senegalese forward earned his place on the shortlist after scoring 24 goals and providing 13 assists in 55 matches for Al-Nassr, helping the club win the Saudi Pro League title.

The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star has carried Africa’s hopes on the global stage for more than a decade. His nomination is a reminder that even as a new generation rises, Mané remains among the continent’s most influential players.

Africa’s representation goes beyond the main Ballon d’Or award. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Senegal’s Édouard Mendy and Cape Verde’s Vozinha have been nominated for the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Bounou recorded 30 clean sheets for Al-Hilal, while Mendy helped Al-Ahli win the Asian Champions League and Saudi Super Cup.

The future is equally bright. Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ivory Coast forward Yan Diomandé and Algeria’s Ibrahim Maza were nominated for the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on October 26. Hakimi may be Africa’s strongest contender for the main award, but the wider shortlist proves that African football continues to produce elite talent across every position.
