The race for football’s most prestigious individual honour is officially underway after the 2026 Ballon d’Or nominees were revealed.
Thirty players have been shortlisted for the men’s award, with the list bringing together some of the world’s biggest names following a season shaped by domestic league battles, European competition and the FIFA World Cup.
Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha, France captain Kylian Mbappé and returning Argentine icon Lionel Messi are among the names expected to dominate the debate.
This year’s award is particularly difficult to call because voters must weigh different kinds of greatness. Some players delivered exceptional club seasons, others shone on the world stage, while a few have carried their teams through an entire campaign with consistency and leadership.
The Ballon d’Or has never been free from controversy. Fans often disagree on whether the award should go to the player with the best individual statistics, the player who won the most trophies or the footballer who produced the most memorable moments.

The women’s Ballon d’Or shortlist has also been announced, alongside nominees for goalkeeper, young talent, coach and club of the year awards.
