Bukavu School Fire Kills at Least 24 Children as Eastern Congo Faces Fresh Tragedy

At least 24 children have died after a devastating fire swept through a school area and neighbouring homes in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The fire destroyed two schools and around 300 wooden houses, leaving families in the city to deal with grief, injuries and homelessness. Officials said the children killed included 19 girls and five boys.

Bukavu is located in South Kivu province, an area controlled by the Rwanda-backed AFC/M23 rebel movement since its advance in eastern Congo last year. Authorities in the rebel administration said an investigation has been launched to establish how the fire began.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after children had gone to school. Witnesses described ambulances arriving to carry away bodies and injured survivors as smoke continued to rise from the ruins.

At least 29 people were reported to be receiving treatment, including 21 in intensive care. Health workers and local residents warned that the death toll could rise as hospitals continue receiving casualties.

The disaster exposes the vulnerability of communities living in densely populated settlements where homes are often built from highly flammable materials and emergency services may be limited. Once fire takes hold in such areas, it can spread quickly from one structure to another.

For eastern Congo, the fire comes against a background of conflict and displacement that has placed enormous pressure on families and public services. Many residents already live with insecurity, interrupted schooling and limited access to healthcare.

The loss of children in a place meant to offer learning and safety will deepen the trauma. As investigations continue, families will need both immediate humanitarian assistance and clear answers about whether stronger safety measures could have prevented such devastation.
