Kenya Braces for Powerful El Niño as Government Identifies Emergency Shelters

Kenya has begun preparing emergency shelters and rescue resources following warnings that the developing El Niño could bring dangerous rainfall, flooding and displacement.

The government says schools will not be converted into camps because doing so could disrupt national examinations and damage educational facilities. County commissioners have instead been directed to identify churches, mosques and chiefs’ camps capable of accommodating displaced families.

The National Disaster Operations Centre is mapping evacuation areas, positioning boats and preparing food, fuel and medical supplies. Eighteen counties have reportedly been identified as particularly vulnerable, with the heaviest displacement expected around November and December.

The World Meteorological Organization says El Niño is firmly established and has a nearly 100 per cent probability of continuing through February 2027. It is expected to intensify into a very strong event before peaking towards the end of 2026.

However, a powerful El Niño does not produce identical conditions everywhere. Local rainfall will also be influenced by regional weather systems and geography.

Families in flood-prone areas should monitor official forecasts, secure identification and medical documents, clear drainage channels and avoid crossing swollen rivers.

For the government, early warnings must now be converted into visible preparation. Kenya cannot prevent extreme rainfall, but it can prevent predictable weather from becoming an avoidable human tragedy.
