Tooro Falls Silent as King Oyo’s Body Returns Home for Final Journey

The body of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has returned to Uganda ahead of his burial on September 12.

President Yoweri Museveni received the late monarch’s remains at Entebbe. The government has assumed responsibility for the official burial arrangements, which include a service at St John’s Cathedral before burial at the Karambi Royal Tombs.

The king died of cancer in the United States on August 27 at the age of 34. He had ascended the throne in 1995 when he was only three years old, making his life inseparable from the modern history of the Tooro Kingdom.

Nine days of mourning have been announced, giving subjects and national leaders time to pay their respects.

Attention will also turn to the kingdom’s transition after the funeral. For now, however, the focus remains on honouring a monarch whose reign lasted more than three decades despite his remarkably young age.
