Turkana Families Face Deepening Hunger Crisis as Drought Pushes Children Into Acute Malnutrition

A worsening humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Turkana County, where persistent drought, failed rains and disease risks are pushing vulnerable families to breaking point.

Aid workers have warned that acute malnutrition is affecting a significant number of children in the region. Some mothers are reportedly skipping meals so that their children can eat, while households are forced to stretch limited food supplies and nutrition supplements across several family members.

Turkana’s crisis is a reminder that Kenya’s development story is deeply unequal. While major national debates often focus on politics, taxation and urban business, pastoralist communities continue to face the immediate realities of empty water points, dying livestock, food shortages and limited access to healthcare.

Livestock remains the foundation of many households in northern Kenya. When pasture disappears and animals die, families lose food, income, school fees and the ability to withstand another emergency. The effects often extend beyond hunger, increasing the risk of school dropout, migration and early marriage among vulnerable households.

Humanitarian agencies are combining nutrition treatment with water support, health screening and long-term community programmes. But emergency aid alone cannot solve a crisis that is becoming more frequent as climate patterns grow harsher.

Turkana County and the national government need stronger investment in water infrastructure, drought-resilient livelihoods, livestock support and accessible community health services. The county should not have to wait for another emergency headline before action is taken.
