Clean Cooking Push Gains Momentum as Kenyan Families Seek Cheaper, Safer Energy

Clean cooking is becoming one of Kenya’s most important household and health conversations as companies and governments look for ways to reduce dependence on charcoal, firewood and kerosene.

Across Africa, nearly one billion people still rely on polluting fuels for cooking. The result is not only environmental damage but also serious health risks, particularly for women and children who spend long hours around smoke-filled kitchens.

New financing models are now helping to make cleaner stoves more affordable. Carbon credits allow companies to raise money based on the emissions they expect to reduce by replacing traditional cooking methods with cleaner alternatives.

Nairobi-based clean-cooking company BURN is among the firms using this model to distribute stoves across Africa. The approach can lower the cost paid by households, making cleaner options more realistic for families that would otherwise struggle to afford them.

For Kenya, clean cooking is about more than climate change. It is about respiratory health, the cost of charcoal, deforestation and the time many families spend searching for fuel.

The challenge is ensuring that clean stoves are genuinely affordable, durable and suited to local cooking habits. A solution that works in a city apartment may not automatically work in a rural home. Cost, fuel supply and repair services all matter.

The government should support policies that make clean energy accessible without leaving households dependent on short-term subsidies. The private sector, county governments and community groups also have a role to play.

A cleaner kitchen may not sound like a national economic issue, but it is. It affects health bills, school attendance, household budgets and the environment. Kenya’s clean-cooking transition could become one of the most practical ways to improve everyday life.
