Five people have died and eight others sustained injuries following a serious road accident on the Nakuru–Eldoret highway.
Police said the crash happened at about 4:50 a.m. when a Kapsowar Sacco matatu travelling from Nakuru towards Eldoret hit the rear of a truck that had stalled on a climbing lane.
Kuresoi North police commander John Kimutai said two of the injured passengers were in critical condition. The casualties were taken to Londiani Sub-County Hospital, while the bodies of those who died were moved to the mortuary.
Both vehicles were taken to Mau Summit Police Station as investigations into the accident began.
The crash has renewed concerns about stalled vehicles, poor visibility and speeding on major highways during early-morning travel. Motorists approaching climbing lanes and steep sections are advised to reduce speed and watch for stationary vehicles.
The names of the victims had not been released by publication time, pending notification of their families.
