US Backs Kenya’s Critical Minerals Plan, Putting Kwale in the Spotlight

Kenya’s push to process critical minerals locally has received fresh backing from the United States, opening a new chapter in the debate over how the country should benefit from its natural resources.

The focus is partly on Mrima Hill in Kwale County, an area believed to contain rare earth minerals and niobium—materials considered important in advanced manufacturing, renewable-energy technologies and electronics.

For Kenya, the opportunity is bigger than mining itself. The government wants to move away from the long-standing model in which raw materials are extracted and exported with limited local benefit. Local processing and value addition could create skilled jobs, strengthen manufacturing and generate more revenue for communities and the country.

But mineral wealth alone does not guarantee development.

Communities living near mining areas will reasonably demand clear answers about land rights, compensation, environmental protection and their share of the benefits. The experience of many resource-rich countries shows that poor oversight can leave communities with pollution and displacement while profits flow elsewhere.

The US has said it supports transparent and community-respecting development of Kenya’s mineral sector. That commitment will be tested by the details of any future project: who receives licences, where processing plants are built, how jobs are allocated and whether environmental safeguards are enforced.

If Kenya gets the model right, critical minerals could support a broader industrial strategy. If it gets it wrong, the country could repeat the familiar pattern of exporting valuable resources while importing finished products at a higher cost.
