Authorities in Kisumu have approved the controlled demolition of a residential building in Mamboleo after inspections found that the damaged structure posed a safety risk.
The decision followed a joint assessment involving the county security team, the National Construction Authority and Kisumu City Management. September 25 reports said demolition was expected within 48 hours.
Civil Scope Engineering Limited was appointed to undertake the operation. Officials said the necessary approvals had been obtained and nearby residents were being notified ahead of the exercise.
The building stands near Jomo Kenyatta Stadium. Authorities said people living or operating nearby needed advance information to allow the demolition team to manage the surrounding area.
According to Sacco Review, rescue teams had helped tenants recover more than 85 per cent of their belongings. The report also said affected tenants had received their security deposits back.
Engineers intend to preserve structural samples and part of the foundation for further assessment. A technical committee is expected to examine documentation and establish responsibility for the failure.
Officials also clarified that an “X” painted on a building does not automatically mean demolition is imminent. Some markings identify compliance issues that require correction rather than an immediate structural threat.
The incident has renewed official appeals for developers to use accredited professionals and qualified contractors. Authorities also announced plans to inspect other marked buildings, placing wider construction compliance under scrutiny.
