One Dead and 11 Missing After Mudslide Strikes China

One person has died, and 11 others are missing after a mudslide struck a village in eastern China’s Jiangxi province.

The disaster occurred at about 4 a.m. in Gaoping Town, Suichuan County, following torrential rainfall associated with Typhoon Saudel.

Authorities said approximately 12 houses were damaged. Emergency teams launched a search for the missing while assessing the stability of the surrounding slopes.

Heavy rain can rapidly saturate soil in mountainous areas, causing earth, rocks, and debris to move downhill with little warning. Night-time landslides are particularly dangerous because residents may be asleep and visibility is limited.

The confirmed casualty figures could change as rescue operations continue. Residents in other high-risk locations are being urged to follow evacuation orders and avoid rivers, unstable slopes, and flooded roads.

The disaster adds to growing concerns about severe weather affecting communities across Asia during the current storm season.
